US govt picks 19 biofuel projects to get $564 mln

WASHINGTON, Dec 4 (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Friday said 19 biofuel refinery projects have been selected to receive up to $564 million to enhance the development of advanced biofuels using biomass feedstocks.

The funding includes $25 million to Honeywell’s (HON.N) UOP subsidiary, $24.8 million to Archer Daniels Midland (ADM.N), $21.8 million to Solazyme and $50 million to Sapphire Energy.

The projects, spanning 15 states, are designed to accelerate the construction and operation of pilot, demonstration, and commercial scale facilities, said the Agriculture and Energy departments in a joint statement.

Solazyme plans a pilot plant that will produce algae oil that can be converted to oil-based fuels, the government said, while UOP will work to produce green gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from agricultural residue, woody biomass, dedicated energy crops, and algae. ADM plans to use acid to break down biomass for conversion to fuels or energy.

“Advanced biofuels are critical to building a cleaner, more sustainable transportation system in the United States,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

The funding was part of the $787 billion U.S. stimulus plan put in place earlier this year to help the struggling economy.

Advanced biofuels are those that do not rely on the corn kernel starch. Cellulosic ethanol can be made from switch grass, corn stover, forest waste, fast-growing trees, wood chips and other plant material.

The government said of the nearly $564 million in funding, up to $483 million will go to 14 pilot-scale and four demonstration-scale biorefinery projects across the country.

The remaining $81 million will focus on the construction of Bluefire LLC’s biorefinery project previously awarded funding. The facility will produce ethanol fuel from woody biomass, mill residue, and sorted municipal solid waste.
