States challenge rules on critical habitats for endangered species

Eighteen states led by Alabama and Arkansas have filed a lawsuit challenging revised federal rules they claim illegally broaden the definition of “critical habitats” for endangered and threatened species.

Under the Endangered Species Act, specific areas can be designated as essential for the survival of animals or plants listed as endangered or threatened.
