Environmental groups sue over extension of red snapper fishing season

Environmental groups are challenging the U.S. Department of Commerce’s extension of the period during which sport fishermen are allowed to catch red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico from 3 days to 42, saying it could lead to overfishing.

Ocean Conservancy and Environmental Defense Fund filed a lawsuit against the Department of Commerce in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Monday.
