EU ministers back monitors for Georgia ceasefire

BRUSSELS, Aug 13 (Reuters) - European Union foreign ministers expressed broad support on Wednesday for sending EU monitors to supervise a French-brokered ceasefire between Russia and Georgia in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia, diplomats said.

"There was strong support for European peacekeepers, there will probably be European peacekeepers," one EU diplomat listening to the discussion at an emergency meeting in Brussels said.

Another said discussion was continuing but there was widespread support for sending monitors to the region to help cement a fragile truce after six days of fighting. (reporting by Ingrid Melander, writing by Paul Taylor)
