Fact Check-Clip of Biden referring to electric vehicles and gas is cropped to remove context

A video clip of U.S. President Joe Biden saying that with an electric vehicle “you can go across America on a single tank of gas” has been misleadingly cropped. Full footage shows that immediately after, he said that this was “figuratively speaking.”

Compilations on TikTok featuring the cropped clip have been viewed over 5.5 million times ( , ). Iterations on Facebook can be seen ( here , here , here ).

“This is amazing! His dementia is getting worse! He is reading this and says it with a straight face!” a Facebook user commented. “Damn! Biden more demented than I even thought he was!” another wrote.

The moment dates back to Oct. 28 ( here ), when Biden delivered remarks about his Build Back Better agenda, which aims to expand the social safety net in the United States and boost climate change policy ( here ).

Around timestamp 14:04 ( ), speaking about the strategies in his package to combat the climate crisis, Biden said:

“We’ll build out the first-ever national network of 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations all across the country. So, when you buy an electric vehicle, and you get credit for buying it — when you buy an electric vehicle, you can go all the way across America on a single tank of gas, figuratively speaking. It’s not gas; you plug it in. Five hundred thousand of them — these stations along the way.”

Biden’s $1.75 trillion Build Back Better package, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives on Nov. 19 to be revised by the Senate, includes rebates and credits to cut the cost of American-made, union-made electric vehicles by $12,500 and of rooftop solar systems by 30%.
