Fact Check-CNN chyron quoting Putin warning against India’s interference in the 2022 Ukraine crisis is a fake

Social media users have shared a digitally altered screenshot of a CNN news clip that includes a chyron quoting Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying: “India should not interfere, otherwise be ready to face the consequences.” Reuters found no evidence of this statement being reported by CNN or any other news outlet.

An example of the altered screenshot can be seen on Twitter here with the caption: “#Russia tells #Modi not to interfere in Ukraine or be ready to face consequences.”

More iterations of the screenshot can be seen here , here and here .

The image in the screenshot was captured from a CNN news show anchored by Frederik Pleitgen and broadcast on Nov. 12, 2019. Pleitgen reported that Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov had joked about U.S. election interference.

The original chyron reads, “Top Russian official jokes about interfering in U.S. elections in 2020.” The full video can be seen here .

The official twitter account of The Lead CNN also shared the screenshot here on Nov. 12, 2019, with a caption, “Russian interference in U.S. elections now comedy fodder for Kremlin.”

On Feb. 26, 2022, Reuters reported that India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered help in peace efforts over Ukraine crisis during a phone call with President Zelensky (here).

Verdict

Altered. The screenshot from CNN seemingly reporting Putin’s comment on India is not authentic.
