Fact Check-Altered photo of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holding a Trump t-shirt

Social media users are sharing an altered photo of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holding a t-shirt with a text and an image of former U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

Examples can be seen here: ( here ) and (here).

The photo shows DeSantis holding up an orange t-shirt with a text that reads: “I’d love a mean tweet and 1.79 gas right now”.

The comments on the posts read: “No kidding, where can I order this shirt?”, “Awesome shirt I would love one of these!” and “To have someone like him on our side is a major blessing. Stay strong”.

DeSantis posted the original photo on his Twitter account (here) on September 27, 2019.

The t-shirt actually reads, “I went to Popeyes for the new chicken sandwich and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.” The caption on the post says that the photo was taken on a visit to the Popeyes and Burger King headquarters in Miami.

Reuters previously debunked the same photo of DeSantis holding up the orange t-shirt with another slogan that read “Your mask is as useless as Joe Biden” (here).

Altered. A photo of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holding a Trump t-shirt was altered. The actual photo shows a Popeyes slogan on the shirt.

Correction June 21, 2022: The date in paragraph 5 has been corrected.
