Fact Check-Ukrainian firefighters wearing donated gear from Canada is not evidence the images were faked by CNN

Images of Ukrainian firefighters wearing gear donated by the Edmonton fire service in Canada have baselessly been used as evidence that the footage was faked by news broadcaster CNN.

Examples of posts sharing the false claim can be seen (here), (here), (here), (here).

The posts point to a CNN broadcast (here) reporting on what local officials say was a Russian military airstrike on a fuel storage facility in Lviv, Ukraine.

In the background, one of the firefighters can be seen wearing a jacket with ‘Edmonton’ written on the back.

Some social media users are interpreting this as evidence that the footage is fake, and was never shot in Ukraine.

“Things are getting so bad in Ukraine that Edmonton firefighters are on the scene (laugh emoji) CNN you never fail to deliver…comedy that is”, one post sharing a screenshot from the broadcast reads (here). The jacket, however, was donated to Ukraine by Edmonton firefighters.

The non-profit group Firefighter Aid for Ukraine (here) - which collects unneeded firefighter gear, personal protective equipment (PPE), life rescue equipment, and medical supplies from fire departments and vendors in Canada – confirmed the CNN report shows their donated gear.

“Thanks to Stu Abercrombie for catching this shot of Ukrainian firefighters near Lviv wearing gear donated by Edmonton firefighters,” the group wrote on Facebook (here).

Edmonton Fire Chief Joe Zatylny likewise confirmed in a Facebook post that the CNN footage showed their donated gear (here).

At the beginning of March, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Alberta Provincial Council (UCC-APC) and Firefighter Aid Ukraine launched a charity drive to deliver supplies to Ukraine.

The donations included “nearly 12 tonnes of firefighter gear, medical supplies, and other desperately needed items, like an infant incubator, an x-ray machine, and hospital beds,” according to CTV News (here it-s-overwhelming-charter-flight-filled-with-local-donations-to-ukraine-departs-edmonton-1.5815034).

CNN correspondent Don Lemon has posted about his reporting trip to Ukraine with photos and videos (here).

CNN announced it would stop operating in Russia in early March, in response to a new Russian law there that could jail anyone intentionally spreading "fake" news (here).

In recent weeks, Reuters has published several fact checks about claims misrepresenting CNN, which can be seen (here), (here) and (here).

VERDICT

False. The jacket has the word ‘Edmonton’ on the back because it was donated to Ukraine from the Edmonton fire service.
