Social media users are sharing a quote about the U.S. government lying to citizens but wrongly attributed it to American actor Bill Murray.

Examples can be seen here and here .

The quote reads: “So, if we lie to the government it’s a felony. But if they lie to us its politics. – Bill Murray”

Reuters found no evidence that Murray ever said this. A Google search of the quote and Murray’s name brings up no credible sources.

A representative for Murray did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

The quote was published in a tweet on Oct. 18, 2013 (archived here ) from a parody account with the description: “I AM NOT BILL MURRAY. This is a parody account. This account is not in any way affiliated with the actor Bill Murray.”

The account has since been suspended here .

The quote appears on the website of etymologist Barry Popik, who traced the origin of the quote to an article (here), published in Iosco County News Herald on June 9, 2010 (here). Older iterations date back to 1987.

Fact checkers PolitiFact (here) and Check Your Fact (here) have also debunked the claim.

False. There is no evidence that Bill Murray ever made the comment about the government.
