Fact Check-Baseless claims attributed to Ted Cruz about Jan. 6 feature unrelated videos

A video circulating on Facebook combines two statements that are months-old from Republican Senator Ted Cruz about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and immigration policy and falsely say it is evidence he exposed facts that have come out from the Jan. 6 Committee.

The video was posted on Aug. 9 with the caption “Nancy Pelosi SPEECHLESS as Ted Cruz Expose’s New Facts that have come out from Jan 6 Committee” (here).

Cruz is not part of the U.S. House of Representative Select Committee probing the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol (here) and has been critical of the Democrat-led committee.

A Twitter advance search brought no evidence of him exposing any information that arose during a committee hearing, but rather brought tweets in which he calls the committee “a joke” or “a political theater” ( ).

Reuters found no media coverage about any such announcement. A Google search brought no relevant results ( ).

The committee hearings have been widely reported by Reuters and other news outlets ( ) ( here ) ( The most recent one took place on July 21, over two weeks before the video on social media was posted (here).

Neither of the two addresses by Cruz included in the video refers to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.

Representatives for Cruz did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

Between timestamp 00:00 to 5:48, Cruz is seen speaking on March 2, 2022, days after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine (here). A video recorded from a slightly different angle of his conference was published by Forbes (here).

He claimed that the invasion was a “direct result” of what he described as two “catastrophic mistakes” of the administration of U.S. President Biden: the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021 (here) and the elimination of sanctions to Nord Stream 2 AG, the company behind Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany (here).

An automated transcript is viewable on YouTube (here). He did not mention the Jan. 6 attack of the Capitol in his speech.

From timestamp 5:47 and onwards, Sen. Cruz is seen addressing U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas at an oversight hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The footage is from Nov. 16, 2021 (here).

His statement, in which he questioned Mayorkas about immigration policy during the administration of President Joe Biden, is viewable on his official YouTube channel (here).

Cruz referred to the record high arrests of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border registered by the Biden administration in the for the last fiscal year (here) (here). Among other things, he asked about detention centers and figures on migrant kids and fatalities at the border. He also asked if Biden and VP Kamala Harris had visited the border.

At no point in his address does he mention the capitol insurrection.

Reuters previously debunked a similar post about Cruz that used unrelated footage alongside an unsubstantiated claim (here).

Misleading. This video compiles two unrelated statements from Sen. Ted Cruz. It does not show Cruz disclosed facts about Jan. 6.
