Fact Check-Photo of injured girl is from 2018 Syrian war, not Ukraine

A photograph circulating online of an injured girl is from 2018 and was taken during the Syrian war, not Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as users claim.

Examples can be seen (here), (here) and (here).

The text in one post reads: “One of the most heartbreaking images from the Russia/Ukraine war. Putin must end this for humanity’s sake.”

A reverse Google Images search of the photo reveals that it was featured in a BBC article published on Jan. 6, 2018 (here) about the Syrian war.

The photo is visible on the European Pressphoto Agency website (here) with the description: “A young girl is treated at a hospital after a bombing in Mesraba, Eastern al-Ghouta, Syria, 03 January 2018. At least 19 people were killed in airstrikes on the cities of Erbeen and Mesraba by forces loyal to the Syrian government. EPA-EFE/Mohammed Badra.”
