Social media users are sharing an edited video of a whale surfacing near a shore and questioning whether it shows a genuine video.
Examples can be seen (here) and (here).
Some comments on the posts question whether the video is real.
A closer look at the video makes it clear that this clip consists of two separate videos that were combined. The horizon appears to be hazy and moving throughout, and the whale passes through the fence and ground towards the end of the video. The water also does not splash enough for a whale this size.
A reverse Google Images search of a keyframe in the video leads to a TikTok video (here) posted on Oct. 19, 2021.
The creator of the post commented: “This video is a combination of editing, editing is not good, I hope you do not mind, I am working hard to learn editing technology.”
Reuters was not able to identify the two separate clips in the video.
VERDICT
Altered. The video was created by combining two separate clips. It does not show a real whale surfacing with people watching.
