Egyptian guard dies on Israeli border

RAFAH, Egypt, Oct 4 (Reuters) - An Egyptian border guard died on Sunday of gunshot wounds, seemingly self-inflicted, at a post on the Israeli border, 20 km south of the Rafah crossing with Gaza, security sources said.

The guard was shot twice in the legs and bled to death before he arrived at Rafah hospital, one source said, adding that investigations were under way to determine what had happened.

A separate Egyptian security source said the conscript had accidentally shot himself with an automatic machine gun.

A spokesperson for the Israeli military said it had no reports of any incident on the border with Egypt.

The incident occurred at international border post number 22, where the guard was on duty. The post is south of the Rafah crossing, on the border with Israel. (Reporting by Rasha Kamal and Yusri Mohamed; Writing by Alastair Sharp; Editing by Kevin Liffey)
