UPDATE 1-Genesco says payment processing network hacked

* Says certain card details may have been compromised

* Says payment process for Journeys unit affected

Dec 10 (Reuters) - Genesco Inc (GCO.N) said a part of its computer system that processes payments for some of its popular brands had been hacked into and it was possible that certain details of cards used might have been compromised.

The shoe and hat retailer said the extent of the intrusion is not known, but it took immediate steps to secure the affected part of its network.

The news comes just days after credit card giants MasterCard (MA.N) and Visa (V.N) came under intense cyber attack as supporters of WikiLeaks retaliated for moves against Julian Assange following the release of U.S. diplomatic cables.

Genesco said it believes the intrusion has been contained and that customers can now safely use their credit and debit cards.

“We recommend that our customers review their card statements and other account information carefully and immediately notify their card issuer if they suspect fraudulent use,” Genesco Chief Executive Officer Robert Dennis said in a statement.

The company said the affected network processed card transactions for its United States Journeys, Journeys Kidz, Shi by Journeys and Johnston & Murphy stores, and for some of its Underground Station stores.

Shares of the company closed at $38.66 on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by NR Sethuraman in Bangalore; Editing by Jarshad Kakkrakandy)
