Aug 28 (Reuters) - Global airlines, which had warned of
shrinking their workforce due to a collapse in air travel amid
the coronavirus crisis, are now serving layoff notices to
employees, sending them on unpaid leave, cutting pay or seeking
voluntary retirements.
The following table lists some carriers that have announced
changes to their workforce in the face of the continuing
COVID-19 pandemic:
AIRLINE RIC CHANGES
AIR FRANCE The carrier plans to cut 6,560,
or 16% of jobs, at the main
airline by the end of 2022, and
another 1,020 jobs will go over
the next three years at sister
airline "HOP!", representing 42%
of staff
AMERICAN The airline expects its
AIRLINES workforce to shrink by 40,000,
GROUP INC including 19,000 involuntary
cuts, in October as the COVID-19
crisis continues to weigh on air
travel, unless the government
extends aid for airline employee
payrolls
AZUL SA The Brazilian airline has laid
off nearly 1,000 employees, or
about 7% of its staff
BRITISH Unite, the union which
AIRWAYS represents the airline's cabin
crew, says the 30,000 staff it
plans to keep are being given
new contracts, some with pay
cuts of up to 70%. British
Airways says it has proposed pay
cuts to a maximum of 20%. The
airline has previously said it
plans to cut 12,000 staff, or
more than a quarter of its
workforce
DELTA AIR Delta is set to furlough 1,941
LINES INC pilots in October due to the
fallout from the COVID-19 crisis
and plunging air travel demand
EASYJET The British low-cost airline has
said that 727 of its UK-based
pilots are at risk of
redundancy, equivalent to about
one-third of its pilots in the
country. EasyJet said in May it
needed to cut 4,500 jobs to stay
competitive
EL AL The airline, which sent nearly
ISRAEL all its 6,500 employees on
AIRLINES unpaid leave, is expected to cut
its workforce by about 2,000
EMIRATES The Dubai state-owned carrier's
workforce of 4,300 pilots and
nearly 22,000 cabin crew could
shrink by almost a third from
pre-coronavirus levels
KENYA To lay off an unspecified number
AIRWAYS of workers, reduce its network
and get rid of some assets due
to the coronavirus crisis
LUFTHANSA Germany's Lufthansa, which
employs about 138,000 people,
will cut 20% of its leadership
positions and 1,000
administrative jobs in a
restructuring plan
QANTAS Australia's airline is axing at
AIRWAYS least 20% of its workforce under
LTD a sweeping cost-saving plan. The
6,000 job cuts will come from
across the airline's 29,000
workforce. A further 15,000
workers will remain furloughed
until Qantas begins operating
more flights
QATAR Qatar Airways will lay off some
AIRWAYS pilots and reduce the salaries
of others by as much as a
quarter due to the impact of the
global coronavirus pandemic. The
company has previously said it
would lay off close to 20% of
its more than 40,000-member
workforce
UNITED The airline said it would need
AIRLINES to cut 2,850 pilot jobs this
HOLDINGS year, or about 21% of the total,
INC without further U.S. government
aid.
