EU extends review of EDF purchase of British Energy

BRUSSELS, Dec 2 (Reuters) - The European Commission has extended its competition review of plans by French utility EDF EDF.PA to buy nuclear operator British Energy BGY.L.

A list of merger notifications distributed by the EU executive on Tuesday showed that the review deadline for the acquisition had been extended to Dec. 22 from Dec. 8.

The Commission said the extension was due to commitments offered by those involved to remedy competition concerns.

EDF, the world’s biggest producer of nuclear energy and already the fifth largest electricity supplier in the UK, said in September that it had bid 12.5 billion pounds ($18.55 billion) for British Energy. (Reporting by Jeremy Smith)
