Russia says "largely positive" on Obama Afghan plan

MOSCOW, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday its reaction to U.S. President Barack Obama’s new initiative on Afghanistan and Pakistan was “generally positive”.

“Moscow has in general positively reacted to the main points of the new U.S. strategy on Afghanistan and Pakistan announced by President Barack Obama on Dec. 1,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Russia, like the entire world community, is interested in the fastest establishment of Afghanistan as a self-sufficient, prosperous and independent state, free from drug-generated crime and terrorism. We believe the implementation of the tasks set in the American strategy will assist achieving this goal.” (Reporting by Dmitry Solovyov) ((dmitry.solovyov@reuters.com; +7 495 775 1242))
