Drew Doughty scored the game-winner 50 seconds into overtime for the Los Angeles Kings, who surrendered a three-goal lead before beating the host Calgary Flames 4-3 Tuesday night for their first victory of the season.
While his team enjoyed a power play, Doughty was fed a cross-ice pass and sniped a puck from the top of the left circle.
Ilya Kovalchuk collected a goal and two assists, and goaltender Jack Campbell made 26 saves for the Kings, who rebounded from a 6-5, season-opening loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
Doughty added two assists, Tyler Toffoli contributed a goal and an assist, and Sean Walker also scored for Los Angeles.
Matthew Tkachuk had two goals for the Flames, including the tying tally with 1:04 left in regulation. Tkachuk also assisted on Noah Hanifin’s goal.
The Kings took advantage of a shockingly lethargic Flames team to stake themselves to a 3-0 lead. Toffoli opened the scoring just 2:53 into the affair when he one-timed a shot from the top of the right circle.
Walker then doubled the lead at 17:26 of the opening frame when he simply sent the puck to the front of the net from the side boards that Flames goalie David Rittich misplayed.
Then Kovalchuk made it a 3-0 lead 3:46 into the second period when he batted a rebound into the net.
The Flames awoke at that point, with Tkachuk scoring just past the midway point of the game. Tkachuk pounced on an Anze Kopitar giveaway and wired a shot from the high slot.
Less than three minutes later, Hanifin made it a one-goal game when he sent a shot from in close that Campbell appeared to stop before the puck squeaked over the line.
Late in the third period, with the Calgary net empty for an extra attacker, Campbell stopped a long shot, but Tkachuk neatly bunted the puck out of the air to himself and then batted it into the cage to force overtime.
Rittich made 36 saves for the Flames, last year’s Western Conference regular-season champions who have dropped two of three games to kick off the campaign.
