Wideman's 1st two-goal game pushes Sens past Kings

Chris Wideman enjoyed his first career two-goal game Saturday afternoon, when he scored in the first and third periods for the host Ottawa Senators in a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Wideman’s multi-goal game came in his 161st career game and one day shy of the anniversary of his last goal, which he scored against the Edmonton Oilers.

Chris Tierney, Mark Stone and Colin White also scored for the Senators, who raced out to a 4-0 lead midway through the second period and were never threatened. Goalie Craig Anderson recorded 36 saves as Ottawa snapped a two-game losing streak.

Trevor Lewis scored late in the second period for the Kings, who have alternated losses with wins in their first five games. Jack Campbell was chased after giving up four goals on 11 shots for Los Angeles. Backup Peter Budaj stopped 10 of 11 shots.

Tierney opened the scoring 6:29 into the first, when he snuck in behind Campbell in the goalmouth and got a stick on a shot by Dylan DeMelo, who likely would have scored if not for Tierney redirecting the puck.

Wideman doubled the lead with 8:10 left in the period, when he backhanded home a rebound of a shot by Brady Tkachuk.

Stone scored a power-play goal following a frantic scramble in the crease with 3:41 remaining in the first. Matt Duchene’s shot, the third of a flurry by the Senators, was trickling behind Campbell when Stone lunged and tucked it into the net.

White chased Campbell a second beyond the midway point of the second period. Christian Jaros opened an end-to-end rush by firing the puck across the ice to Maxime Lajoie. The puck ticked off Lajoie’s stick and to White, who outraced Kings defenseman Alec Martinez to collect the puck before he sprinted up the ice and beat Campbell with a shot from the left faceoff dot.

Lewis ensured the Kings wouldn’t be blanked by scoring with 4:07 left in the second. Wideman added his milestone goal with 8:57 to go in the third.
