DHAKA (Reuters) - Nine Nepalese athletes were injured when an over-crowded hotel lift plunged in the Bangladesh capital on Friday, South Asian Games organisers said.
Three, including two female judo-fighters, were admitted to hospital while others received first-aid.
“The elevator (for 10 people) plunged as it was overloaded with 17 athletes,” said an official of the Imperial Hotel in downtown Dhaka.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will later open the Jan. 29-Feb. 8 South Asian Games, the biggest annual sports gathering of the sub-continent, comprising the hosts, Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Some 1,800 athletes and players are competing in 23 disciplines from late on Friday.
