SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez will be out of action for up to nine months after having hip and possibly knee surgery in the United States next month, said a report on his website (www.gonzaleztenis.com).

The hard-hitting 30-year-old Chilean right hander, world number five in 2007 but now languishing at number 44, has been troubled by tendinitis in both knees this season.

Gonzalez, who has 11 singles titles, had to retire during his first round match at the U.S. Open last month after which the Chilean’s hip injury was discovered.
