Nation-hopping Kazakh trio thrown out of hockey tournament

GUANGZHOU, China (Reuters) - Three Kazakh players have been booted out of the women’s hockey tournament at the Asian Games after admitting they had played for Belarus at a World Cup qualifying tournament earlier this year.

Anastassiya Chsherbakova, Alessya Pyotukh and Yuliya Mikheichik have all been banned from competing further at Guangzhou, organisers said in a statement on Saturday.

“Kazakhstan will also be deemed to have withdrawn from matches against their previous opponents. Japan, China, Thailand and Malaysia will all be awarded a score of 5-0 against the Kazakhs,” the statement said.

The 10-3 defeat by South Korea will stand.

Kazakhstan had won only one of their preliminary matches, against Thailand, and slumped to a 6-0 loss against India on Saturday.

The medal-deciding matches will be held on Wednesday.
