NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian state-run trading firms like MMTC Ltd and State Trading Corp of India have been asked to enter into short-term contracts for onion imports, Trade Secretary Rahul Khullar said on Wednesday.
These companies are currently importing edible oils and pulses.
Onion prices in India have more than doubled in the past week due to a shortage caused by unusually heavy rain in growing areas, adding to the risk of voter anger about the high cost of food.
