US Treasury to borrow $362 bln in Oct-Dec quarter

WASHINGTON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury said on Monday it plans to borrow up to $362 billion in the October-December quarter by issuing new government bonds, lower than previous forecasts due largely to higher debt issuance in the July-September period.

The Treasury said it sold $396 billion worth of marketable debt securities in the July-September period -- some $46 billion more than estimates made in August, leaving the government with a bigger-than-expected cash balance of $310 billion at the end of September.

As a consequence, the Treasury will borrow some $17 billion less in the October-December period than called for in its August forecast. (Reporting by David Lawder; Editing by James Dalgleish)
