Soccer-Partizan Belgrade coach Jokanovic steps down

BELGRADE, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade have parted company with coach Slavisa Jokanovic, the club said on their website ( on Saturday.

Partizan named Jokanovic’s assistant Goran Stevanovic, a former midfielder with the club, as caretaker manager.

Former Chelsea and Yugoslavia midfielder Jokanovic won two successive domestic doubles with Partizan but came under pressure after failing to reach the Champions League group stage.

“I wish my successor all the best,” Jokanovic told the club’s website. “He has taken over a team with a lot of potential.”

Partizan, who qualified for the lesser Europa League, are third in the Serbian first division with seven points from three matches, two behind leaders Vojvodina Novi Sad and city rivals OFK Belgrade. (Reporting by Zoran Milosavljevic; editing by Kevin Fylan; To query or comment on this story email
