Australia's Woolworths says food sales strong

MELBOURNE, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Woolworths Ltd WOW.AX, Australia's largest supermarket chain, said on Thursday food sales were travelling well in July and August.

“We are really off to a great start in the first half for food,” managing director Michael Luscombe told reporters.

The retailer, which also owns Big W discount stores and the Dick Smith electronics chain, reported 12.8 percent annual profit growth on Thursday, in line with market expectations, and forecast slightly weaker growth in the current year.
