BRUSSELS, Oct 28 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that the European Union’s main treaty needed to be changed to deal with any future crisis.
“We need a mechanism that also includes banks and funds that earn high interest and that means that it is not just the taxpayer who has sole responsibility,” Merkel told reporters on arrival at an EU summit in Brussels.
“I also want to discuss the withdrawal of voting rights. We have a Lisbon treaty in which there already is a withdrawal of rights when fundamental values of the European Union are damaged.” (Reporting by Philip Blenkinsop, editing by Rex Merrifield)
