HONG KONG, May 26 (Reuters) - Apple Inc AAPL.O said on Wednesday that it was saddened by a recent spate of apparent suicides at Foxconn 2038.HK, one of its key production partners, and would continue ongoing inspections of all facilities where its products are made.
“We are saddened and upset by the recent suicides at Foxconn,” the maker of iPhones and iPads said in its first public comment on the string of deaths at Foxconn’s southern China production complex.
“We are in direct contact with Foxconn senior management and we believe they are taking this matter very seriously,” Apple said. “A team from Apple is independently evaluating the steps they are taking to address these tragic events and we will continue our ongoing inspections of the facilities where our products are made.”
Apple made its remarks as Foxconn and the company's parent, Hon Hai 2317.TW embarked on a rare public relations blitz to counter a growing backlash against the company over the string of nine apparent suicides there this year.
