Gunman shoots at musicians after Jordan concert

(Adds details and background)

AMMAN, July 16 (Reuters) - An unidentified gunman shot and injured at least six musicians on Wednesday after a concert in the capital before committing suicide, security officials said.

They said the incident took place after a performance by the Amman symphony orchestra with a Lebanese choir at the Roman amphitheatre in the congested downtown area of the capital.

A Jordanian security official said four of the musicians who were shot at by the gunman were Lebanese. The attacker shot himself in the head after being chased, a witness told Reuters.

The musicians’ injuries were mostly light to moderate although one was seriously hurt, another security official told Reuters.

A third security source said he thought the attacker had suspected the Lebanese musicians were Israelis. Israel’s treatment of Palestinians has traditionally angered some in Jordan, where anti-Israeli feelings run high.

The same area of the capital has seen attacks against foreigners in recent years and in September 2006 a lone gunman opened fire on a group of tourists killing a British man and wounding six other people. (Writing by Suleiman al-Khalidi; Editing by Alison Williams)
