PARIS, March 17 (Reuters) - French oil and gas group Total TOTF.PA said on Monday some 100 cubic metres of fuel oil leaked into the Loire river while a ship was being loaded at its Donges refinery near Nantes in western France.
The refinery’s operations were not affected, a Total spokesman said.
A pipe leaked oil for several hours on Sunday afternoon at the Donges refinery, which produces 231,000 barrels per day, with three-quarters of the leak going onto the river bank and a quarter into the river, Total said.
“The leak was stopped soon after agents working on the loading of the ship realized what was happening,” the spokesman said, adding the leak had spread over several kilometres.
“Means to fight polution have been activated as soon as yesterday,” the prefecture said. (Reporting by Guillaume Frouin and Muriel Boselli)
