Frito-Lay to bump up natural ingredients in snacks

NEW YORK, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Half of Frito-Lay North America's product line, including its potato chips and Tostitos tortilla chips, will be made from natural ingredients starting next year, the PepsiCo-owned PEP.N snack food maker company said on Tuesday.

That marks a rise from 30 percent, the company said. The move comes as food businesses around the world try to improve their nutritional profile as more people choose to eat healthier food.

In October, PepsiCo said it would form a global nutrition group focused on fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy, part of a strategy to triple the revenue of its nutrition business to $30 billion by 2020.

The new Frito-Lay products will not contain artificial flavors, preservatives or ingredients such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), the company said.

By the end of 2011, more than six dozen varieties of Frito-Lay products will be made with natural ingredients. (Reporting by Dhanya Skariachan. Editing by Robert MacMillan)
