SANTIAGO, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Former President Eduardo Frei conceded defeat in Chile’s presidential election to his conservative rival Sebastian Pinera on Sunday, after early results showed he had lost.
“I want to congratulate Sebastian Pinera,” Frei said. “I wish him success in his term.”
In an early official count, the government said Pinera took 51.87 percent of the vote with 60.3 percent of polling stations counted, compared to 48.12 percent for Frei. The numbers were rounded off.
