TAIPEI, April 23 (Reuters) - Compal Electronics Inc. (2324.TW), the world’s second-largest contract laptop PC maker, said on Monday its first-quarter net profit rose 18 percent from a year ago as laptop demand remained healthy.
Taiwan’s Compal earned net profit of T$2.6 billion ($78 million) for the first quarter, higher than T$2.20 billion a year ago, as the result beat the mean forecast of T$2.32 billion profit from analysts polled by Reuters Estimates.
Compal also said it is aiming to ship 20 million notebook computers this year, up 38 percent from 14.5 million shipped in 2006. It said its first-quarter gross margins slipped to 4.8 percent from 5.1 percent a year earlier.
