WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission said on Wednesday it is launching a internal task force to determine the effect of current and future rules and regulations on consumers.
The move is in line with a more consumer-friendly approach by the Democratic-controlled FCC panel. The two Republicans also said they support the new Consumer Task Force.
“As communications networks and technologies become increasingly complex and essential to Americans’ everyday lives, the commission must be a vigilant watchdog for the consumer,” FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said.
Joel Gurin, chief of the FCC Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, will head the cross-agency task force.
In August, the FCC launched a broader consumer protection inquiry into the disclosure of fees and charges associated with advertisements, point-of-sale and bundling of various products.
The FCC also launched a series of inquiries into a range of consumer issues ranging from early termination fees on some Verizon Wireless handsets and why the Google Voice application is not on Apple Inc’s popular iPhone.
