MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico’s leading broadcaster Televisa may explore new deals to tap the mobile phone business in Mexico after parting ways with NII Holdings’ Nextel unit, a company source told Reuters.
The two companies announced earlier on Monday that they were ending a short-lived venture where Televisa would buy a minority stake in Nextel. Nextel will still move ahead with the deployment of a 3G, or third generation, network in the country.
“We remain interested in the opportunity (of the mobile market) but we will keep our options open, that may, may not include a deal with Nextel,” added the source, who requested not to be named since they were not authorized to talk to the media.
