Pelosi backs expansion of Medicare in Senate plan

WASHINGTON, Dec 10 (Reuters) - The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday voiced support for a crucial provision of a possible Senate Democratic compromise on healthcare reform.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she wanted details before passing judgment on the overall proposal, but “there’s certainly a great deal of appeal about putting people 55 and older on Medicare,” the federal health program for the elderly.

“That is something that people in the House have advocated for years,” Pelosi, a Democrat, told reporters in a hallway exchange following her weekly news conference. (Editing by Chris Wilson; reporting by Thomas Ferraro)
