Obama understands US deficit must be tackled -W.House

WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has laid out an “opening bid” in how to tackle the U.S. budget deficit and understands it must be addressed, the White House said on Thursday after the IMF warned on the U.S. deficit.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that Obama’s call for a 5-year freeze in non-defense discretionary spending in his Tuesday State of the Union address showed he was serious in confronting the country’s long-term fiscal challenges.
