High school junior Bassett signs with Rapids

The newest Colorado Rapids player is high school junior Cole Bassett, signed to a Homegrown contract on Friday.

Bassett, 17, is the eighth player to join the Rapids after progressing through the Rapids Academy.

Padraig Smith, Colorado Rapids’ executive vice president and general manager, called the occasion “a special day for the club. Cole is very talented and a very humble young man. It’s a big credit to both his parents, as well as our Development Academy staff, that we’re able to bring such a well-rounded person and player in to our first team.”

Bassett joined the academy last year and sped from the U-17 to the U-23 team.

The Rapids, at 5-12-5, sit in 11th place in the Western Conference with 20 points, four points ahead of the last-place San Jose Earthquakes.
