Italian union proposes strike over austerity plan

ROME, May 26 (Reuters) - Italy’s largest union will propose to its members a general strike at the end of June in protest at a package of budget cuts approved by the government, Guglielmo Epifani, head of the CGIL union, said on Wednesday.

“I will propose next week to the directive committee a general strike for the end of the month (of June),” Epifani told a news conference. Italy centre-right government unveiled a 24 billion euro two-year austerity plan late on Tuesday, which slashes funds to local governments and freezes salaries for state workers.
