Japan PM candidate Kan: to keep emission cut policy

TOKYO, June 4 (Reuters) - Japanese Finance Minister Naoto Kan, a candidate to replace outgoing Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, said on Friday he plans to keep Japan’s policy to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2020 from 1990 levels.

Kan was speaking to a meeting of party lawmakers just before they vote to choose a new leader, and hence prime minister.

Hatoyama resigned this week to boost the party’s chances in an upper house election next month, which the party must win to avoid policy deadlock. (Reporting by Yoko Nishikawa, Rie Ishiguro, and Leika Kihara)
