1st Circuit overturns extortion convictions for Boston Teamsters

A U.S. appeals court has overturned the extortion convictions of two former International Brotherhood of Teamsters officials in Boston, saying their threats to picket local businesses that hired non-union workers were made in pursuit of legitimate labor goals.

A unanimous three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday also threw out John Perry and Joseph Burhoe’s 2015 extortion convictions for threatening union members who complained that they were deprived of work in violation of a seniority rule.
