BAE workers facing layoffs may still vote in union election - NLRB

Employees of a San Diego-based unit of defense contractor BAE Systems Inc can move forward with a union election this week, even though more than half of them are facing imminent layoffs, a National Labor Relations Board regional director has ruled.

Regional Director William Cowen in Los Angeles on Friday said that while 149 employees of BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair Inc will lose their jobs beginning next week, they are eligible to vote because they were employed by the company when the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers filed a petition to represent them.
