Merger trend continues as Philadelphia law firms unveil tie-ups

Philadelphia law firms Saul Ewing and Ballard Spahr both announced combinations with smaller peers on Tuesday in the latest sign of consolidation in the legal industry.

Saul Ewing said it combined with Chicago-based Arnstein & Lehr to create a firm called Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr, with more than 400 lawyers. Prior to the tie-up, which became effective Sept. 1, Saul Ewing had about 260 attorneys and Arnstein & Lehr had about 150.
