Eastern Libyan rebels quit checkpoint under fire

AJDABIYAH, Libya, March 15 (Reuters) - Rebels fighters in the eastern Libyan town of Ajdabiyah retreated from a checkpoint on the western edge as forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi bombarded them on Tuesday, a Reuters correspondent reported.

“There is a lot of to and fro. They may go back later, but it is the first time I have seen them abandon that checkpoint in such numbers since I have been here,” said correspondent Mohammed Abbas.

As he fell back, Abbas said the bombardment started creeping closer to the town. “The barrage is now landing closer to the town,” he said. (Reporting by Mohammed Abbas; Writing by Edmund Blair in Cairo)
