Macedonian move for early election in June

SKOPJE, March 30 (Reuters) - Macedonia’s ruling party asked parliament on Wednesday to schedule an early election in June as a way out of a months-long political deadlock.

“Our party asks parliament to call an early election for June 5 2011,” Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who is also head of the ruling VMRO DPMNE party, told reporters on Wednesday.

Under the Macedonian constitution, parliament must first vote to dissolve itself, allowing the parliamentary speaker to set the date for the vote.

Gruevski’s move came after Macedonian opposition parties walked out of parliament in January and began an indefinite boycott of the legislative body protesting a court decision to freeze the accounts of a pro-opposition TV station and three newspapers.
