Mexican stocks close down 3.97 pct on U.S. worries

MEXICO CITY, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Mexican stocks plunged to their lowest level in more than two years on Tuesday as fears mounted that the rapidly spreading credit crisis would drag the economy of the United States into recession.

The IPC stock index .MXX dropped 3.97 percent to 20,884.74 points. It was the IPC's fourth straight day of losses, which have knocked nearly 17 percent off the index.
