The Swedish financial group is one of the best capitalised in Europe, Chairman Carl Eric Stalberg told daily Dagens Industri, adding he found it difficult to understand speculation the bank would need to raise more new capital.
Swedbank issued 12.4 billion crowns ($1.44 billion) of new shares at the end of last year and last week dropped plans to pay a dividend for 2008 to shore up its capital position against rising loan losses — mainly from the Baltic region.
“Of course, looking back now, you can obviously say that expansion in the Baltic was too fast,” Stalberg added.
However, he said that the crisis would pass in the region and Swedbank would be in a strong position.

The telecoms gear maker said it had won an order from Indonesian mobile operator Telkomsel to expand network coverage, boost capacity and improve performance.Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Norwegian media group Schibsted is considering selling some assets, such as taking a partner into its Schibsted Classified Media online advertising business, Chief Executive Kjell Aamot said in an interview with the company’s daily Aftenposten.
Though Schibsted could ask shareholders for a capital injection, Aamot said that is “far down on our priority list. So it is more timely to sell operations.”
