CHICAGO, Sept 13 (Reuters) - U.S. meat company Smithfield Foods Inc. SFD.N said on Thursday that beginning next week it will increase pork production at its Sioux City, Iowa, plant, to produce pork that will be shipped to China.
In August, the company announced a deal to sell 60 million lbs of pork to a Chinese trading company.
“This is being done to meet the contract needs for China,” Dennis Pittman, Smithfield spokesman, told Reuters.
The plant will begin processing an additional 3,200 hogs a day next week, or about half of a normal production shift, Pittman said. Also, the plant will add about 250 workers.
