Suntech Power signs polysilicon supply contract

NEW YORK, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Chinese solar electricity company Suntech Power Holdings Co STP.N said it had signed new supply agreements to buy 9,420 metric tons of polysilicon and 1.1 gigawatts of silicon wafers from GCL Silicon between 2008 and 2012.

With the contract, Suntech has now secured about 1 gigawatts of silicon for 2009. Terms of the deal were not released.

Tight supplies of that material have limited expansion of the photovoltaic solar makers, although new supplies are expected to begin coming on line by the end of the year. (Reporting by Matt Daily; Editing by Steve Orlofsky)
