MUNICH, Feb 9 (Reuters) - McDonald’s (MCD.N) is counting on a meatless burger and rising coffee sales to help spur growth this year in Germany, its fourth-biggest global market.
Revenue in Germany rose 2.6 percent last year to a record 2.9 billion euros ($4 billion), though average sales per customer dipped, country head Bane Knezevic said on Tuesday.
He told reporters he expected similar sales growth this year despite rising unemployment, which will make business conditions tough. He gave no profit details.
The world’s biggest hamburger chain opened 28 new outlets in Germany last year — fewer than it had hoped — and plans to adds 25-30 this year to its current 1,361 sales points.
In a campaign to attract more women customers with fresh food, McDonald’s is reintroducing this week a vegetable burger made of potatoes, peppers and carrots.
Its McCafe coffee shops — it added 117 last year — saw 2009 sales rise 24 percent.
“When people buy a Big Mac they are more and more often taking a Latte Macchiato as well,” he said.
